Lady of Candelaria
Originating in the 17th century, the woodcarving tradition of Gröden (Val Gardena), Italy is a remarkable heritage passed down through generations. During the long winter months, local farmers crafted wooden toys and utensils to supplement their income. Over time, their skills evolved, leading to the creation of intricate and exquisite wooden sculptures—especially religious figurines and crucifixes—that earned international acclaim.
Today, Val Gardena remains a celebrated center of woodcarving, renowned for its unique style and exceptional quality. Nestled in the mountainous heart of Italy, this tradition has grown continuously for centuries and is now an integral part of European woodcarving culture.
Our collection features authentic handcrafted pieces that reflect this rich legacy—each one a testament to the masterful artistry and dedication of Val Gardena artisans. Bring home a piece of history and spirituality with these timeless wooden treasures, cherished far beyond the valley borders.
Also known as Our Lady of Candelaria or La Morenita, the Virgin of Candelaria is the patroness of the Canary Islands, venerated especially in Tenerife, where her image is enshrined in the Basilica of Candelaria. Depicted as a Black Madonna, she holds the Infant Jesus in one hand and a candle—symbol of light and guidance—in the other.
Her devotion began in the 15th century and quickly spread across the world, becoming especially beloved in Latin America and the Philippines, where she is honored as a powerful intercessor and motherly protector. Her feast is celebrated on February 2 (Feast of the Presentation) and August 15 in the Canary Islands.
She is a symbol of faith, hope, and light for those walking through darkness, reminding the faithful that the Virgin Mary always leads us to Christ, the true Light of the world.
