Lady of Sorrows

  • Our Blessed Mother knew the depths of sorrow, as foretold by Simeon at the Presentation: “And you yourself a sword will pierce.” From that moment, Mary lived her life in perfect faithfulness, carrying every trial with unwavering love. She remained at the foot of the Cross when her Son suffered and died, showing us that she never abandons us in our own pain and struggles.

The statue of Our Lady of Sorrows depicts Mary with seven swords piercing her heart, each one representing the seven great sorrows she endured in union with her Son: Simeon’s prophecy, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in the temple, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, standing at the Cross, holding His lifeless body, and placing Him in the tomb. Each sorrow reveals her strength, her compassion, and her deep participation in the mystery of salvation.

Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows is a way of drawing close to the Mother who knows suffering intimately and who gently leads us to Jesus when we are hurting. She is the patroness of those who suffer, of families in distress, and of all who seek comfort in grief.

The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is celebrated on September 15, the day after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross—reminding us of her presence at Calvary and her closeness to us in our own crosses.

Place this statue in your home as a sign of Mary’s faithful love and as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, she stands with us and leads us to hope in Christ.
