Mary, Undoer of Knots is a beloved Marian title that dates back to the early 18th century in Germany. The devotion was inspired by a Baroque painting in St. Peter’s Church in Augsburg, which shows the Virgin Mary gracefully untying a long ribbon of knots—symbolizing the struggles, sins, and challenges we face in life.

 

The title comes from a reflection by St. Irenaeus, who wrote, “The knot of Eve’s disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary.” Devotion to Mary under this title grew in popularity after Pope Francis (then Fr. Jorge Bergoglio) encountered the image while studying in Germany and brought it back to Argentina, where it spread rapidly.
