Lady Undoer of Knots
This beautiful statue of Our Lady, Undoer of Knots captures one of the most comforting images of Mary — patiently untying the knots in a ribbon, a symbol of the struggles and hardships in our lives. She does so with gentleness and maternal care, reminding us that no knot is too tight or too difficult for her to undo when we bring it to her in prayer.
The devotion dates back more than 300 years, rooted in the story of German nobleman Wolfgang Langenmantel and his wife Sophie, whose troubled marriage was healed after prayer to Our Lady. The image became especially beloved after Pope Francis, while Archbishop in Buenos Aires, spread the devotion and encouraged the faithful to trust Mary with their own “knots” of life.
Even earlier, in the second century, St. Irenaeus beautifully wrote that “the knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by the obedience of Mary.” This powerful truth shows how Mary, through her faith and “yes” to God, unravels the tangled mess caused by sin and guides us back to peace and grace.
Mary, Undoer of Knots, is a powerful intercessor for families, marriages, and all who feel burdened by trials, confusion, or uncertainty. She patiently untangles what weighs on our hearts and leads us closer to her Son.
Her feast is often celebrated on September 28, the day tied to the Langenmantel family’s miracle of reconciliation.
Bringing this statue into your home is a reminder that whatever knots of worry, pain, or difficulty you carry, Our Lady is ready to untangle them with her tender love.
