St Anthony of Padua
Originating in the 17th century, the woodcarving tradition of Gröden (Val Gardena), Italy is a remarkable heritage passed down through generations. During the long winter months, local farmers crafted wooden toys and utensils to supplement their income. Over time, their skills evolved, leading to the creation of intricate and exquisite wooden sculptures—especially religious figurines and crucifixes—that earned international acclaim.
Today, Val Gardena remains a celebrated center of woodcarving, renowned for its unique style and exceptional quality. Nestled in the mountainous heart of Italy, this tradition has grown continuously for centuries and is now an integral part of European woodcarving culture.
Our collection features authentic handcrafted pieces that reflect this rich legacy—each one a testament to the masterful artistry and dedication of Val Gardena artisans. Bring home a piece of history and spirituality with these timeless wooden treasures, cherished far beyond the valley borders.
St. Anthony of Padua, born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195, began his religious life as an Augustinian priest but later joined the Franciscan Order, inspired by the martyrdom of five Franciscan missionaries. He desired to preach the Gospel and, if needed, lay down his life for Christ. Though initially seen as quiet and unassuming, Anthony’s gift for preaching was soon discovered, and he became one of the Church’s greatest theologians and orators.
He is often depicted holding lilies and the Christ child. The lily is a symbol of his purity, while the image of him cradling the infant Jesus reflects a beautiful legend: while in deep prayer at a hermitage, St. Anthony was granted a vision of the Christ child, who appeared to him in radiant light and divine joy. A witness to this moment kept the secret until Anthony’s death, honoring his humility.
Known for his fearless love, simplicity, and concern for the poor and marginalized, St. Anthony was also a peacemaker and a powerful voice for justice. His sermons brought many back to the faith, not through harshness, but through gentleness, clarity, and compassion. Despite his brilliance, he remained a humble servant of God, always seeking to live out the Gospel with sincerity and courage.
St. Anthony died in Padua, Italy, in 1231 at the age of 36 and was canonized less than a year later due to the many miracles attributed to his intercession. He is especially invoked today as the patron saint of lost things, and his relics and shrine in Padua continue to draw pilgrims from around the world.
His life reminds us of the call to love deeply, forgive freely, live simply, and place all our trust in God.
